To solve a system of linear equations, we can use substitution, elimination or something we call augmented matrices. To use matrices to solve a system of linear equations, we first enter the values associated with each of the variables and the answer. Once we put the information into a matrix (a rectangular array of numbers), we can use matrix operations to solve the equation.

Solving quadratics can be difficult. Completing the square is one method for solving a quadratic equation. A quadratic equation can also be solved by factoring, using the square roots, or using the quadratic formula. The cool thing is that solving quadratic equations by completing the square will always work when solving quadratic equations, and the technique is a good tool to have in your math tool belt.

If logarithms seem like Greek to you, this interactive algebra 2 lesson will help you sort things out. We can use many bases for a logarithm, but the bases most typically used are the bases of the common logarithm and the natural logarithm. The common logarithm has base 10, and is represented on the calculator as log(x). The natural logarithm has base e, a famous irrational number, and is represented on the calculator by ln(x). The natural and common logarithm can be found throughout Algebra and Calculus.

The standard form of a line puts the x and y terms on the left hand side of the equation, makes the coefficient of the x-term positive, and puts everything else on the right side. The standard form is not used for graphing. In that case you would use the slope-intercept form.

There are several ways to solve quadratic equations, one of which is factoring. When we solve quadratic equations by factoring we set one side of the equation to zero, and then factor the quadratic equation, so we can use the zero product property to determine where x = 0.

In addition to solving quadratic equations by factoring, we can also use square roots, the completing the square method, or the quadratic formula.
